Why the Booster Club is Needed...
      (...and Why We Need You.)

The Alamance Burlington School System only provides a small amount of funding for athletic programs. All athletic programs operate off of gate receipts (ticket sales) and contributions. It takes a substantial amount of money to purchase equipment, uniforms, pre-game meals, transportation, training, and other expenses associated with the athletic programs, not to mention play-off games and matches.

How the Bulldogs Booster Club Helps...

The Booster Club raises funds to support our athletic programs by selling ad space in game programs and collecting donations from parents, family, friends, and other interested people. Without this support, these important athletic programs would not function at the level they do, or in some cases, at all.

Maintaining Our Heritage...

Williams High School has an outstanding heritage of both academics and athletics. This high level of preparation of our students during their years at WHS carries over to all other stages of their lives. The ability for students to participate in organized, well-funded athletic programs helps prepare them for greater success in college, their careers, and life in general. Maintaining the ability to offer these programs of critical importance.

The Benefits of Athletics

In a comprehensive, statewide study of the academic performance of high school student-athletes in North Carolina over a three-year period, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association found significant differences between athletes and non-athletes. Five criteria were used, including grade-point average, attendance rate, discipline referrals, dropout rate and graduation rate, for the 1994-95 academic year.

Non-athletes

Grade-point average

2.86

1.96

Average number of absences per 180-day school year

6.52 days

12.57 days

Discipline referrals

30.51%

40.29%

Dropout rate

8.98%

Graduation rate

94.66%

Findings from the National Center for Education Statistics, Extracurricular Participation and Student Engagement, June 1995, revealed that during the first semester of their senior year, participants reported better attendance than their non-participating classmates. Half of them had no unexcused absences from school and half had never skipped a class, compared with one-third and two-fifths of non-participants, respectively.

Students who participated were three times as likely to perform in the top quartile on a composite math and reading assessment compared with nonparticipants.

Participants also were more likely than non-participants to aspire to higher education; two-thirds of participants expected to complete at least a bachelor’s degree while about half of nonparticipants expected to do so.

A Guaranteed Investment...

Your contribution makes a significant difference to the lives of these young student athletes. Every dollar you give is an investment not only in their future, but ultimately the future of us all. Each student who graduates from Williams High School having participated in one or more organized athletic programs will, in all likelihood, be a better college student, a better employee, a better employer, a better entrepreneur, a better parent, and a better citizen.
